It premiered in February 2001 and completed six seasons as of October 30, 2007. Origins and format KTV, according to host William Neal , originated from a karaoke competition hosted by Channel 5 the previous year during its annual “Gimme 5″ Christmas special. Neal claimed the show was not looking as much for real singing talent as for stage performance- giving a good performance for the audience. Auditions for the first season were held for most of February, primarily at Channel 5′s Belize City office. The first show aired on February 20, 2001, from the Bellevue Hotel on Southern Foreshore. Six contestants (trimmed to five in later seasons) appeared and sang a selection played by the karaoke director (originally Richard Villanueva, later replaced by a team featuring former champion Louis Maskall). The best performer was selected by a group of judges and advanced to the semifinal round; in all ten semifinalists were selected. In the semi-finals, the contestants again sang a song of their own choosing and the top two advanced to the final round. In the final, each contestant sings two songs and

Chasing the Rising Sun: The Journey of an American Song

Chasing the Rising Sun: The Journey of an American Song

$17.99

Chasing the Rising Sun is the story of an American musical journey told by a prize-winning writer who traced one song in its many incarnations as it was carried across the world by some of the most famous singers of the twentieth century. Most people know the song “House of the Rising Sun” as 1960s rock by the British Invasion group the Animals, a ballad about a place in New Orleans — a whorehouse or a prison or gambling joint that’s been the ruin of many poor girls or boys. Bob Dylan did a version and Frijid Pink cut a hard-rocking rendition. But that barely scratches the surface; few songs have traveled a journey as intricate as “House of the Rising Sun.” The rise of the song in this country and the launch of its world travels can be traced to Georgia Turner, a poor, sixteen-year-old daughter of a miner living in Middlesboro, Kentucky, in 1937 when the young folk-music collector Alan Lomax, on a trip collecting field recordings, captured her voice singing “The Rising Sun Blues.” Lomax deposited the song in the Library of Congress and included it in the 1941 book Our Singing Country. In short order, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Lead Belly, and Josh White learned the song and each recorded it. From there it began to move to the planet’s farthest corners. Today, hundreds of artists have recorded “House of the Rising Sun,” and it can be heard in the most diverse of places — Chinese karaoke bars, Gatorade ads, and as a ring tone on cell phones. Anthony began his search in New Orleans, where he met Eric Burdon of the Animals. He traveled to the Appalachians — to eastern Kentucky, eastern Tennessee, and western North Carolina — to scour the mountains for the song’s beginnings. He found Homer Callahan, who learned it in the mountains during a corn shucking; he discovered connections to Clarence “Tom” Ashley, who traveled as a performer in a 1920s medicine show. He went to Daisy, Kentucky, to visit the family of the late

Excerpt: “Black Velvet” is a rock song written by Canadian musicians David Tyson and Christopher Ward, and recorded by Canadian singer Alannah Myles in 1989. It became a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1990 and reached number one on the Album Rock Tracks chart, as well as number one in Canada and number two in the UK Singles Chart. In 1990, country music artist Robin Lee reached number 12 on the U.S. country singles charts with a cover version. The song is about Elvis Presley. The words “black velvet” can refer to either his likeness frequently being painted on black velvet or his voice. Also, Black Velvet (full name “Sullivan’s Black Velvet Hair Dye”) is what Elvis used to give his naturally brown hair its distinctive black sheen. Black velvet is described as a “new religion that’ll bring y’all to your knees” (changed to “bring you to your knees” in the Robin Lee version). The chorus tells of “Black velvet in that little boy’s smile/Black velvet with that slow, Southern style” and the end of the first verse claims that “The boy could sing, knew how to move, everything/Always wanting more, he’d leave you longing for “. While the first verse discusses the beginning of Elvis’ life – “Mama’s dancing with baby on her shoulder” – the second talks about the height of his career – “Mama’s baby is in the heart of every schoolgirl; Love Me Tender leaves ‘em crying in the aisles”. The final verse references his death – “In a flash he was gone, it happened so soon, what could you do?” The song appears on the video games, Karaoke Revolution Presents: American Idol Encore and Lips: Party Classics and also appeared on a season 2 episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race. 7″ single 12″ maxi Country music artist Robin Lee, also signed to Atlantic at the time, … More:

$8.59

Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: “Lips of an Angel” is a power ballad by Oklahoma rock band Hinder written by Brian Howes, Austin Winkler and Cody Hanson. It was released as the second single from their album Extreme Behavior. It was their breakthrough hit, charting in the Top Ten on several Billboard trade charts in the United States, and reaching Number One in several countries. A second cover version was released in early 2007 by country music artist Jack Ingram. His version, which was his third Top 40 country hit, peaked in the Top 20 on the Billboard country music charts. The lyrics deal with a singer describing his feelings when his favored girlfriend from his past calls late at night, somewhat pleasantly interrupting his current relationship. More than once, a reference to the call being secret is made, and the singer expresses concern of a fight ensuing as a result. The song concludes just as it began, with the singer questioning to why she is calling so late, though the second (and last) time it is less literal and more figurative, with the underlying meaning “so late” not at night, but way too late in life; unable to continue the previous relationship. The song ends with the plot unresolved. Austin Winkler from Hinder said on American Top 40 that the song is not about cheating. According to a radio interview done in Atlanta, Georgia the lyrics are loosely based on an actual phone call incident that did happen. On January 22, 2007 “Lips of an Angel” took over the number one spot on the Canadian BDS chart from The Killers. A week later, it took over the number one spot on Australia’s ARIA Singles Chart from Evermore. The song is featured in the music video games Lips (as downloadable content), Karaoke Revolution Presents: American Idol Encore, Dance… More:

Mrs. Elva Miller

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Elva Ruby Connes Miller (October 5, 1907 – July 5, 1997), who recorded under the name Mrs. Miller, was an American singer who gained some fame in the 1960s for her out-of-tune versions of songs such as “Moon River”, “Monday, Monday”, “A Lover’s Concerto”, and “Downtown”. She sang in an untrained, Mermanesque, vibrato-laden voice. According to Irving Wallace, David Wallechinsky, and Amy Wallace in The Book of Lists 2, her voice was compared to the sound of “roaches scurrying across a trash can lid.” Miller’s rendition of Downtown sounds like a karaoke version as she sings over a professional instrumental section. She briefly breaks into giggling and several times apparently forgets the lyrics. Nevertheless, her Downtown single reached the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 1966, peaking at #82.

Excerpt: “Pump Up the Jam” is the opening track on Technotronic’s album Pump Up the Jam: The Album. The song was a worldwide smash hit, reaching number two in the United Kingdom in 1989. The song was also a landmark release for the Belgian EBM- and New Beat-influenced house music. It was able to tackle the tough American market and became the first house song to break into mainstream. It reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was later certified triple platinum. In 2005, it was remixed by internationally renowned DJ/producer D.O.N.S. who took it to number one on the British Dance Chart. Icelandic band FM Belfast made a slow electronica cover of “Pump up the Jam” In 1990, it was parodied with virtually identical music as the German-language Pump ab das Bier (“Pump away the beer!”, urging a fellow barsitter to drink up) by Werner Wichtig, stage name for Raimund Thielcke, who actually had brewer training. The vocal has been sampled in the hardcore music Da pump by Da tekno warriors in 1998 It was remixed by Crazy Frog on the 2005 album Crazy Frog Presents Crazy Hits. Quebec acoustic cover band The Lost Fingers recorded a cover of the song for their 2008 album Lost In The 80s. Kids Incorporated sang this song on the show’s 7th season. In 2009 the song was interpolated by rapper Pitbull in the song B-Day Suit. In 1992, “Weird Al” Yankovic made a short polka version for his medley “Polka Your Eyes Out”. The song was the background music to a Saturday Night Live skit featuring Nancy Kerrigan figure skating with Chris Farley, to a scene in the 1996 movie Space Jam, where the Looney Tunes and Michael Jordan are getting ready to play basketball. It was also featured in the karaoke video game Singstar 90s, in a scene in the 2008 … More:
